Green Lake County Democratic Party
We Are Inclusive, Progressive, Optimistic, and TimelessGerrymandering/Redistricting
Gerrymandering describes a partisan process that allows a political party to create electoral districts that are composed heavily of voters who support that party. In essence, it creates “safe” districts for their candidates. There is no uniform formula for creating these districts, but there is a national push to (1) invalidate districts that disenfranchise voters, and (2) that are created by partisan political efforts. In Wisconsin, for example, while Democrats outpolled Republicans statewide in November by ______ votes, districts drawn up by the GOP after the 2010 U.S. Census helped Republicans keep control of the Wisconsin Assembly and Senate. New Governor Tony Evers and Attorney General Josh Kaul, both Democrats told voters in November that they would advocate for a nonpartisan approach to redistricting. There are also a number of court cases that also challenge gerrymandered voting districts. This is a broad topic, but we will try to keep you abreast of developments that relate to it.

In a long but fact-filled letter, Wisconsin Common Cause President Jay Heck is calling on concerned citizens to contact their elected state representatives to demand that they support and co-sponsor pending legislation that will force nonpartisan redistricting. Call both your State Senator (Luther Olsen) and State Representative (Joan Ballweg) and demand that they support and co-sponsor the forthcoming legislation to be introduced by Democrats, but that they make this issue a top priority for this legislative session. Make sure it is at the top of their “to do” list for 2019. Keep reading …
