One of our reps in Madison, retiring 14th Senate District Senator Luther Olsen, has called for the legislature to consider Medicaid expansion.

Olsen, who is stepping down from the Senate to make way for Joan Ballweg, the longtime GOP State Assembly rep from Markesan, said in an article from the Citizens Action website that that circumstances have changed: COVID-19 pandemic, soaring numbers of uninsured and a budget shortfall.

In the past Olsen and his GOP colleagues have opposed the expansion. Olsen says in the article that Wisconsin can no longer leave “that kind of money on the table.” The 90 percent federal funding would replace the current 59 percent federal funding for about 150,000 individuals enrolled in Medicaid (2019) and allow tens of thousands more to enroll.

The article also points out that more than 446,000 people in Wisconsin have lost their health insurance as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
