The New York state legislature on Jan. 23 passed New York’s Reproductive Health Act that supporters say will protect women’s access to abortion even if Roe vs. Wade is overturned. The bill’s supporters are worried that the U.S. Supreme Court, which now has a decidedly conservative majority, will overturn the court’s earlier rulings on abortion. The bill also removes abortion from the state’s criminal code. This protects doctors and other medical professionals who perform abortions from criminal prosecution. Critics of the legislation say it is too far-reaching.
